About

Rosalie Scheibe Lewis, a native of Philippi, West Virginia began her studies in art and photography in Baltimore, Maryland at an early age. After studies at Maryland Institute College of Art and Martinet School of Art in Baltimore, she opened her own studio in Baltimore. Although a lucrative business, she gave it up to continue her studies in art history and painting.

After studying Aztec archaeology and painting in Moralia, Mexico, Lewis was an Assistant in Art at Thiel College and later was an Assistant Professor and Chairman of Fine Arts at Emory and Henry College in Virginia. In 1963 she pursued her studies further by attending the Muthesus School of Fine and Applied Arts, (a branch of the Bau Haus), in Kiel, Germany. Under Godfreid Brockman, she learned techniques of painting in egg tempera. While in Europe, she accepted a position with the Department of Defense schools where she spent much of her time arranging exhibitions between German and American schools.

Rosie Lewis remained in Europe for twenty-five years continuing her studies and also her teaching. While in Europe her paintings were exhibited in prestigious galleries in both American and Europe. She was awarded the Maltese Cross of the Order of Saint John, a society organized at the time of the crusades. She returned from Germany continuing to paint and exhibit her work in galleries and solo shows.

Rosie is now living in East Tennessee in a retirement home where she is the “artist-in-residence.” She continues to paint every day and teach art classes to her fellow residents, staff, and friends.
